5 Fun Facts About The Masters
The 2014 Masters Tournament kicks off on Thursday, in what is known as the most famous showcasing in golf. So in honor of this prestigious tournament, Magellan Jets has collected a few fun facts for you to enjoy. You know, in case you find yourself in a random PGA trivia game this weekend.
1) Each hole is named after a plant or shrub. For example, No. 3 is called “Flowering Crab Apple.”
2) There are three dedicated bridges at Augusta National:
Sarazen Bridge at hole No. 15 honoring Gene Sarazen’s double eagle during the 1935 Masters Hogan Bridge at the No. 12 green honoring Ben Hogan’s then record score of 274 in 1953
Nelson Bridge at the No. 13 tee honoring Byron Nelson’s performance on holes No. 12 and 13 when he won the 1937 Masters
3) Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower is the only U.S. president to have been a club member. There was even a cabin built on the grounds for the President and Mrs. Eisenhower for their visits.
4) The first tournament was held March, 22 1934. The Masters Tournament was called the “Augusta National Invitational” for the first five years (1934-1938).
5) The tournament was not played during the years 1943, 1944 and 1945 because of World War II. To help with the war effort, turkey and cattle were raised on the Augusta National Grounds.
