Augusta Regional Airport reported 2,034 private jets landed and took off during last year’s Masters Tournament in August, GA. This year they estimate that number will increase close to 3,000 private planes. Due to parking problems the last two years, the airport has decided to implement new procedures to help alleviate the parking issue. Pilots no longer have to reserve parking places, they’ll be issued on a first-come first-served basis. In 2013 and 2014, the airport required prior reservations but ran into issues with customers parking their planes longer than their reserved time. This caused a buildup when other aircraft arrived for their still-occupied spot.
Ken Hinkle, Director of Aviation Services, said they also plan to double aircraft parking capacity by using two taxiways as parking areas. This will allow close to 200 planes to park at the airport at one time. Instead of having to turn customers away, the airport hopes to use every bit of real estate they possibly can to make room.
