Summer destination of the week: The Hamptons
The Hamptons; Lush, beachy and perfectly preppy. The Hamptons are both charmingly quaint and extraordinarily sophisticated with plenty of shops, restaurants, beautiful beaches and sightseeing. Now that summer in full swing, we decided to make the Hamptons our destination of the week! Of course, the beaches in the Hamptons are a popular and must see destination during your vacation, but some people may not be aware of the numerous other attractions the area has to offer. Our highlighted villages include: South Hampton, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, and Montauk, each with its own attractions and personality that make up the Hampton’s hot spots. South Hampton:
- Parrish Art Museum- The new Parrish includes 12,200 square feet of exhibition space- Seven sky-lit galleries devoted to the permanent collection showcase the story of America’s most enduring and influential artists’ colony.
- Cooper’s Beach– Scenic beach stretches 500 feet along the Atlantic shoreline offering a view of historic mansions in the distance.
- Old Halsey Homestead- Built in 1648, Old Halsey Homestead is the oldest English wood framed house in New York State still on its original site.
East Hampton:
- Two Mile Hollow beach-One of the few beaches that offer a lifeguard and bathroom close by. It is the ideal beach spot if you are traveling with young children.
- The Windmills– The first Windmill on Long Island went into operation in the 1600s. Throughout the centuries the mills played important roles in agricultural survival. Many are still open today for visitors to explore the massive machines.
- Guild Hall– Home to the historic John Drew Theater hosts several concerts, film festivals and stage performances every year.
Sag Harbor:
- Whaling Museum– Dedicated to the town’s past whaling port, the museum is home to the largest collection of whaling equipment in the state. It was also featured in Moby Dick.
- Sailacat– Fall in love with your adventurous side by exploring the Hamptons via Sailacat, a private catamaran tour and sunset cruise.
- Goat on a Boat Theatre– Traveling with kids? The Goat on a Boat Theatre is a non-profit theatre introducing young children to a love of theatre. Check out their puppet shows and puppet playgroups.
Montauk:
- Montauk Point Lighthouse– Enjoy a nice bike ride (6 miles from town) to this classic Montauk landmark. The Montauk Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York.
- Hiking– About 70% of Montauk consists of parkland (5 state parks & several town parks). There are miles and miles of trails through the state parks. You can take a guided hike, or venture out on your own.
- Whale Watching– Head out on the Viking Fleet to search the open sea for wild whales and other sea life.
