How did your career in football begin?
“I was a caddy, I carried golf bags, I was a football player and a football coach. Never really had a plan B. It was plan A — I was going to play football. Played at Ohio State. Was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Played four years there, signed with the New England Patriots, played eight years, and then got traded to Kansas City. I was 35, couldn’t play anymore, so I started coaching at Ohio State. Coached there for three years, then went to the Texans. I figured if I was going to continue my coaching journey that I probably would be better in the NFL. I had a great opportunity to go and be in Tennessee as the head coach for six years. And then, like every other coach that’s ever coached, you get fired. It’s always disappointing. I put a lot into it but then, you know, new opportunities are there.”
What made your return to New England special?
“My career took off here <in Boston> in 2001. This chapter is a little different because I spent eight years here. My kids grew up here. We had eight great years, so coming back and there’s a lot of familiar faces with the organization, in the community, around town.”
