Boston- If you want to celebrate Independence Day in proper patriotic style, head for Boston. Boston Harborfest is a Fourth of July festival that showcases the colonial and maritime heritage of the American Revolution. The award-winning festival is a multi-day celebration featuring numerous events throughout the historical city. The attraction brings nearly 2.5 million visitors, making it the nation’s largest patriotic celebration! The highlight of the week long party includes the Chowderfest on Sunday, July 6th. This is a unique opportunity to taste Boston’s best chowder concoctions. Of course, the firework display over the Charles River on the 4th of July is a must see event too!
San Francisco – The highlight of San Francisco’s July 4th celebration, fireworks are set off from the foot of the Municipal Pier and from barges north of Pier 39. The 21-minute show expects a good 600,000 attendees every year. When the show is over, go dancing – live entertainment is offered in the Pier 39 Entrance Plaza. Mount Rushmore- Acclaimed as one of the ten man-made wonders of the world, Mount Rushmore is as grand a tribute to American history as one can get. Their Independence Day celebration is so big it takes up two whole days. The imperial visages of four of the country’s most venerated leaders – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt – are etched into the Black Hills of South Dakota. July 4th features a full day of brass bands, military aircraft flyovers, fun performances by local musicians and dancers. One reminder, Mount Rushmore does not display fireworks at the momument, but many surrounding areas do!
U.S. Virgin Islands- St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John are the only American-owned islands in the Caribbean and they pull out all the stops with two celebratory holidays: their own Emancipation Day, on July 3rd (to commemorate the end of the slave trade), and Independence Day, on July 4 (since joining the U.S. in 1917). Imagine celebrating July 4th drinking a rum punch instead of beer and painting the town red, white, and blue at Caribbean-flavored bashes at night.
