Part 135 Charter Sector Increases by 3.7 Percent Versus Last Year

By: Chad Trautvetter
After climbing to its highest level since 2008 in October, business aircraft activity “cooled down” last month, according to TraqPak data released yesterday by aviation services company Argus. Overall, flying in this segment fell 2 percent year-over-year.
Continuing the trend seen throughout this year, the Part 135 charter sector once again was the only operational category to post a gain in flying activity, increasing by 3.7 percent versus a year ago. Part 91 activity skidded by 4.3 percent, while fractional flying-still reeling from Avantair’s demise-fell by 5.4 percent last month.

Proposal to Lift Ban on Cellular Services on Commercial Flights

Mobile is an unstoppable force that continues to build strength in our society. Now mobile is set to transform the travel experience on commercial flights in the U.S. The Federal Communications Commission is considering a proposal to lift its ban on the use of cellular service use onboard. If the ban is lifted airline passengers will be stripped of their peace and quiet onboard. The proposal is intended to give passengers the same communication access in the air as they would find on buses or in a coffee shop.
In our hyper-connected world, everyone wants to be connected at all times, but who really wants to be trapped next to some chatter box on their phone the entire trip? Amtrak railways have created “Quiet Cars” for those travelers who don’t want to be stuck next to chatty Cathy and Psychologist Patricia Wallace hopes the collective agreement that enforces the quiet in quiet cars on Amtrak would help keep the volume down on aircraft. If “Quiet Seats” are created onboard the commercial aircraft, I am sure those special seats won’t come without a nice little fee too.
I know this next statement is pretty obvious, but if you were to charter your own jet…guess what you wouldn’t have to deal with? That’s right, the gabbing stranger crammed next to you.

Why can’t my private jet get into this airport?

This can be one of the most frustrating questions when chartering an aircraft-especially if you’ve flown into an airport before!
There are a lot of factors that go into operational decisions like whether or not an aircraft can use a specific airport. In this article, I’ll list out a few of them, explain how they can affect your flight, and hopefully shed some light on why the go/no-go decisions are made the way they are.
There’s no fuel available

This can be particularly frustrating if the airport you’d like to use is on the smaller side. Aircraft use two different types of fuel, 100LL (100 octane low lead) for small piston aircraft, and Jet-A (regular jet fuel) for turboprop and jet aircraft. A small reliever airport may have a long enough runway to operate from, but if they don’t have fuel there your jet has to carry enough fuel on the way in to get back out. Sometimes this can be remedied by adding a fuel stop, but often times it makes more sense to use a larger airport that has Jet-A available.

Why November 11th? | Veterans Day

Veterans Day is not one of those “Hallmark” holidays created to force us to buy expensive chocolates & ridiculous amounts of balloons, but an official day for us to say “Thank You” to those who have served our country! Outside our office this morning they held a Veterans Day parade to honor our vets. Different U.S. armed forces marched down the street holding our nation’s flag proudly in the air. I was standing next to an older gentleman who was contently watching as the first group of military men & women came near. You could tell immediately this day was very close to his heart. As they approached us I watched him stand a little straighter and raise his hand proudly to salute them as they walked by, not moving an inch until each one had passed. It was such a cool moment to witness on this very patriotic day. I smiled as I stared at him and quickly snapped a photo.

Shark Tank Star Robert Herjavec On Business Aviation & Magellan Jets

By Jack Olcott
When asked why he owns a Bombardier Challenger 604 business jet plus two Magellan Jet charter cards, entrepreneur and successful investor Robert Herjavec, star of ABC TV’s Shark Tank, related the advice given to him by a friend many years ago. Paraphrasing, Herjavec said “Any problem that you have in life that can be solved with money is really not that big. The only thing in life that we have that we cannot get back is time. I always think that the aircraft is the ultimate time machine.”
Continuing the theme that time is the key ingredient in business development, he said “We use our aircraft as business tools. They save us time. The amount of places we can be and how quickly we can be there is a real competitive advantage. There are a lot of business centers in the USA that are within an hour’s flying time. Traveling quickly to exciting situations is a great way to use a business airplane.”
He described a typical trip: He finished filming in Los Angeles at 8pm, appeared on the Katie Couric Show at 8am in New York City the next morning, lunched with customers there, traveled to Chicago for a business dinner the same day and returning to his home base in Toronto for an early morning appointment the following day. “You cannot do that in a commercial environment,” he concluded.

Survey Shows Top Reason to Use Business Jets

When it comes to private jets, generally the first visual that pops into anyone’s head is a posh, luxurious aircraft with gold fixtures, bottomless champagne and plush leather seats. But the reality is most private jets are used solely as an efficiency tool for passengers rather than a luxury accessory. According to a recent survey done by Aviation International News, 1,100 business jet passengers found that “save time” was the top reason for using a private aircraft. The second top ranked reason was “ability to use airports that airlines don’t serve”.

Aviation Executives Rally at Capitol Hill

On Thursday, Air-traffic controllers, airline pilots and airport executives rallied with a group of leaders from several aviation organizations to protest the government shutdown that occurred on Oct.1st. About 200 aviation group representatives held the rally to call on Washington policymakers to find a path forward so that vital aviation services can resume.
While the shutdown has not immediately impacted aviation safety, the longer the shutdown remains in effect the more risk we are creating. Capt. Sean Cassidy, first vice president of the Air Line Pilots Association, said He cited burned-out runway lights and problems with radar displays that need to be replaced as risks. Pilots continue to anonymously report safety issues from their flights to the Federal Aviation Administration, but Cassidy says the shutdown hinders the government review of them to spot safety concerns.
NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen joined the rally as well to discuss reopening the FAA. Since the start of the shutdown, NBAA has continually called upon decision-makers in Washington to promptly find a path for reopening the FAA.
The link below is a video clip from the rally held at Capitol Hill.

There is no queuing for security, no need to move between terminals or sit waiting for flights. You fly to the airport nearest where you want to go, you do not need to change aircraft and you can fly home when you want to.
