Last week Gulfstream made the surprising announcement it will cease production of the aircraft Forbes’ Custom described as a “Business Aviation Icon”. In order to pave the way for one of the most highly anticipated aircraft Gulfstream has ever created in the G500, the G450 will make its last delivery to a customer in early 2018.
On October 21st 2016, Gulfstream Aerospace made the official announcement that the G450’s production will end. This jet was created on the foundation of the GIV and GIV-SP series and has served as one of the premier business jets during its time. The G450 will still be available through Magellan Jets jet-specific membership programs, but will no longer be available for purchase from Gulfstream.
The G450 made a name for itself with its reliability, speed and versatility. A spacious cabin with multiple sleeping arrangements made for smooth and comfortable long range flights. One of the prime features of the G450 was the fresh oxygen circulating throughout the cabin every two minutes, leaving passengers feeling alert and productive.
Currently in the flight testing stage, the G500 will be put into service just as the G450 goes out in early 2018. There are five test G500’s right now that have flown over 1600 hours. Gulfstream has already got the Flight simulator up and running at FlightSafety International in Savannah, Georgia.

JOIN THE JET SET By: Improper Bostonian Joshua Hebert, the CEO and founder of Magellan Jets, is well-versed in flying high. A former Wall Street exec, Hebert now pilots the Quincy-based private jet travel service, which recently unveiled its new Build-A-Card program. “We looked at technology in the automotive industry, specifically Mercedes, and saw how you can customize and build your car online,” Hebert says. “In our business, no one has been able to customize a jet card with an online portal. The only way to do it was to call into the office and negotiate, but in most cases the high-end consumer did not know what options they had.” (To have those problems, right?) On why people fly private: “One reason people use private aviation is to get to numerous airports in one day and back home in time for dinner. Another concern is needing an air ambulance. When someone gets hurt in Aspen or cuts their leg on coral in Fiji, they want to know they have safe transportation to get them to help. We also transport clients who enjoy a cigar or smoking while traveling, which you cannot do commercially.” On famous clients: “One of the world’s top pop stars is one of our most loyal customers. We won her loyalty by actually declining a trip for her during her tour. The flight she had scheduled was going to be flown by a flight crew who did not meet our safety standards. We told her we didn’t feel comfortable booking the jet for her, but we could find one with the correct safety markings a few hours later…. The seeds of a lowly weed could cut jet fuel’s cradle-to-grave carbon emissions by 84 percent. David Shonnard, Robbins Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering, analyzed the carbon dioxide emissions of jet fuel made from camelina oil over the course of its life cycle, from planting to tailpipe. “Camelina jet fuel exhibits one of the largest greenhouse gas emission reductions of any agricultural feedstock-derived biofuel I’ve ever seen,” he said. “This is the result of the unique attributes of the crop–its low fertilizer requirements, high oil yield, and the availability of its coproducts, such as meal and biomass, for other uses.” Camelina sativa originated in Europe and is a member of the mustard family, along with broccoli, cabbage and canola. Sometimes called false flax or gold-of-pleasure, it thrives in the semi-arid conditions of the Northern Plains; the camelina used in the study was grown in Montana. Oil from camelina can be converted to a hydrocarbon green jet fuel that meets or exceeds all petroleum jet fuel specifications. The fuel is a “drop-in” replacement that is compatible with the existing fuel infrastructure, from storage and transportation to aircraft fleet technology. “It is almost an exact replacement for fossil fuel,” Shonnard explained. “Jets can’t use oxygenated fuels like ethanol; they have to use hydrocarbon replacements.”
